Does your dog "help" you rake leaves?

It’s almost that time again… soon the leaves will change and start to fall from the trees, which means lots of raking in my future.  Last year, I think we ended up raking enough leaves to fill 75 bags.  Yes, we have a lot of trees…

Raking leaves always makes me think of my childhood dog Scotti.  She loved to chase leaves.  We’d rake up a pile, and then Scotti, my sister and I would jump into the pile and play for hours.  Those are some of my favorite memories.

Last year was our first autumn in the new house.  We were no longer in an apartment, so Bella got her first exposure to this whole raking thing.  We tried to convince her to play in the leaves, but she wasn’t very interested.  We even (gently) tossed her into a pile of leaves, but she didn’t see the fun in that.  I’ll just have to live vicariously through videos of dogs playing in leaves instead:

Tell me… does your dog play in the leaves or “help” you with the raking?

  1. I don't have much raking to do because most of my trees are pine trees. We do have some trees in the front yard that lose their leaves and Rowie will only jump in them if I jump with her. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. None of my dogs like to play in the leaves. they like to pee on the piles that I rake up, and Sherman likes to stand in front of my rake so it can't move, but they show no interest in running through them! It's kind of a bummer!

  3. I don't know what you're thinking. Don't you realize Bella watched this video and saw the dog get a treat at the bottom of the pile?

If you think she's going to frolic in the leaves for free, you have another thing coming. I'd say a little salmon jerky might do the trick.

  4. Cali isn't very interested in piles of leaves either . .maybe if we throw a stick in there! I used to walk two Dachshunds that LOVED to run through the leaves . .so cute!!

  5. I had childhood dogs who loved playing in the leaves with us. I haven't really tried exposing the girls to leaf raking, though. Bunny did let me cover her up with leaves the other day for a picture I wanted to take, though!

  6. If we had mature deciduous trees, JF and Dewi would most likely eat the fallen leaves. I have had cats who enjoyed a good leaf romp, though! (It's the curiosity thing.)

  7. Considering Shiva thinks leaves are food, she isn't all that helpful when it comes to raking. She also tends to think the rake is one giant stick to play with. My dog has zero work ethic. ๐Ÿ˜› At least I have someone to blame for not getting anything done, right?

  8. I don't think Our Best Friend knows what leaves are. Last year we raked but never bagged, and he pooped in the piles. ๐Ÿ™

  9. WE have one very tiny tree in our front yard, so I really don't need to do any raking. However, since Dexter is *such* a helpful puppy, he helps me do lots of stuff like getting dressed, sweeping the floor, doing the laundry, doing the dishes. I don't know how I managed before he came to live with us….

  10. Garden Girl – Jumping in together is the most fun!

jen – Bella hasn't discovered peeing on the leaf piles yet. I hope she doesn't!

Pamela – Perhaps you're right. Maybe I need to make it worth her while. Though did you see the time she tried to find a treat under a plastic cup? Her powers of deduction are not the best…

houndstooth – Aw, I bet that was an adorable photo of Bunny!

Elizabeth – My dog Scotti used to eat the leaves too. She'd chase and eat them while we were playing in the pile.

Kristine – Exactly. If the raking doesn't get done, you can just blame Shiva! ๐Ÿ™‚

Ryker & Kirby – You guys need to get these rake attacks on video!

Life Student – Sounds like OBF and Bella have the same opinion of the leaves.

Karen – Thank goodness you have Dexter to get all that stuff done. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  11. And that sounds extra fun! ๐Ÿ˜€ I haven't actually tried that but I found that sweet and cute! Usually my dog helps me in the kitchen with some simple stuffs like picking up some utensils if I got it f ell.
