I know everyone loves It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (and if I drew you a Venn diagram right now, a tiny circle labeled “me” would appear within that larger circle labeled “everyone”). However, I have to admit that there’s a Halloween special that beats it for me. Any guesses? Hint: it stars a big fat Halloween cat…
Revisiting this one made me wonder – what’s your favorite holiday special? I tend to think that Halloween kind of kicks off the holiday season, so feel free to talk Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any other holiday that floats your boat.
Here’s a few (non-exhaustive) lists to get you started: Halloween specials, Thanksgiving specials, and Christmas specials. (Disclaimer: in my book, any list that doesn’t include the Garfield special for the holiday in question is not complete.)
I do love holiday TV (as my viewing habits during the next two months will reflect), so my list could go on and on. Feel free to discuss your favorites in the comments and perhaps I’ll share some of them during the holiday season! I’ll also tell you more about my favorite Thanksgiving and Christmas specials too as the dates get closer. Time to get into the holiday spirit!
Charlie Brown rocks my holidays! Love Hocus Pocus for a halloween movie.
You can’t go wrong with the Peanuts gang. 🙂
My all time favorite holiday special has to be The Year Without a Santa Claus. Love that one and I watch it several times during the holidays!
Happy Halloween!

It’s possible that you will catch me singing the Heat Miser song on a regular basis during the holidays…
I’m quite taken with the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy version myself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMjAf8Nwohs

I love that version!
Hands down, The Year Without Santa Claus! I love this one, and there is no song better than Mr. Heat Miser!

I haven’t seen it since I was a child but it made a big impression on me, Halloween is Grinch Night.
I remember it opening with a huge wind before the little boy in the story excused himself to use the euphemism. Even in elementary school I found that hilarious!

I haven’t seen that one in ages either, but I remember it being a good one! Perhaps I’ll have to see if it’s on Netfix instant or something.
Charlie Brown is classic!

Agreed!
I’m not a big fan of Charlie Brown, I guess even as a child I had empathy for those who are picked on.
Hard to say what my favorite one is, there are so many. I do love, “The Night They Saved Christmas” that is one I will usually put on. Of course the Grinch, The Year Without a Santa Clause and Rudolph, those are probably my favorites.

I did always feel bad for poor Charlie Brown, but I’m a sucker for Snoopy.
Good choices!
How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Without a doubt.
As long as you mean the cartoon and not the Jim Carrey movie I pretend does not exist, I heartily agree!
Of course I mean the cartoon! The theme song is the best ever. “You’re a three decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich, with arsenic sauce!” Love it.
Peanuts, Peanuts, Peanuts. I am a huge fan of every single one of their specials and could probably recite them all by heart, especially the Christmas one. It’s just not Halloween without a dose of the Great Pumpkin. In fact, last year I dressed up Shiva as Snoopy as a WWI flying ace and I went as Charlie Brown as a ghost, holes and all. 🙂

Those costumes sound amazing!
I love The Grinch (the old cartoon though, not the Jim Carey movie). Every year at Halloween I watch The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Stupid Jim Carrey movie. Cartoon all the way!
Rudolph is my all time favorite holiday special!! My friends Grandmother was the voice of Rudolph. Small world, huh?
That’s so cool!
I’m still a fan of “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.” I simply love his dog, Max.

Me tool… I love Max!
LOL, can I choose all of them? I turn into a 6 year old child around Oct 1 and I don’t turn back into a grown up until New Years. Garfield: Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas are all essentials, as are the Peanuts specials. I love the For Better or For Worse Christmas Special and the one about the little elf with blue toes. I love the Nightmare Before Christmas (bonus: It’s good for Halloween AND Christmas!). FROSTY AND RUDOLPH! Every episode of the Treehouse of Horror…Oh oh oh! And the Muppets Family Christmas and a Muppet Christmas Carol!
I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never even heard of Halloween in Grinch Night, but I’m off to find it now…
