Honest movie summaries: Dog edition

Movie summaries intrigue me. It’s a challenge to condense two hours of action into one or two sentences. I admire those who can cut through the fluff and do it with a bit of flair. (Case in point: once I read this blurb, I was never able to look at the Wizard of Oz the same way again. Even Siri has gotten into the act.)

Hence, today’s post. I’ve taken a stab at a few of my own, inspired by some cinematic canines (and one adorably corrupt feline). Some of these movies I love, some I don’t… but they’re all getting the business today.

(If you’re not up to indulging my nonsense at the moment, skip to the bottom of this post and learn of a wonderful and whimsical giveaway. You’re welcome.)

You’re welcome to these, cable TV guide writers:

Bolt – Small white dog discovers he’s living in a canine version of The Truman Show. Hijinks ensue.

Oliver & Company – Innocent kitten joins a gang, turns to a life of crime, and learns that money is the solution to all of his problems.

Eight Below – A cautionary tale about what happens when you flee a natural disaster and leave your dogs behind.

Lady and the Tramp – Even though a couple neglects and abuses their dog after they have a baby, that dog and her boyfriend save the baby from a giant rat while the cats are busy singing about their nationality.

Marley & Me – Rather than properly train their dog or try to understand him, a couple documents his bad behavior and profits from it.

All Dogs Go to Heaven – Criminal dog cheats death and is doomed to go to Hell until an act of self-sacrifice changes his fate. The title, however, kind of gives away the ending.

101 Dalmatians – Delusional woman misreads fashion trends and thinks that wearing a coat made of Dalmatian puppy skin will not reveal her role in a recent Dalmatian puppy abduction. Movie also highlights the dangers of not getting your pets spayed or neutered.

Old Yeller – Trust me, you don’t really want to watch this one. Let’s just agree to pretend that it involves only happy things.

I’m definitely not reaching Wizard of Oz brilliance here, but it was worth a try, right?

How about you? Any movie summaries to share in the comments? Give me some good ones and I’ll do another post sharing your brilliance with the world.

  1. OMD – I took my baby sister (she was about 7 at the time) to All Dogs Go To Heaven when it was in the theaters. On the way to the show we had a little talk … given the title of the movie, I was pretty sure a dog would be dying and I didn’t want her to be too upset. By the end, I was blubbering all over her – probably scarred her for life. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

  2. I loved the movie, My Dog Skip: A boy growing up in the 1940s deep South escapes bullying when his dog learns to drive.

And also, My Dog Tulip (see a theme?): Sad gay man finds meaning in dog poop and humping.

Do you have any video chops? Because if your pocket summaries are this funny, I’d love to see the “honest trailers” you could make for these puppy movies.

Here’s my favorite honest trailer (and it doesn’t even have puppies) to inspire you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOIi9SjJvgU

  3. I love a dog related film! Apparently my Harvey looks like Bolt – it’s what every child seems to say when they see him – he’s a little celebrity without knowing it haha!

Lady & the Tramp is a definite golden oldie – never gets old! Marley and Me though……………way too sad for me to ever watch again!
