What’s on your must-watch holiday list?

I’ve been having trouble getting into the holiday spirit this year. However, a wise doctor (okay, me) prescribed a steady diet of holiday television. My condition has been upgraded, and I’m well on the way to recovery.

What programs are essential to my Daily Recommend Intake of Holiday Television (DRIHT… totally a catchy acronym)? Every year, I must watch at least the following ten things or I’ll get a case of the Grinchies:

  1. A Garfield Christmas Special  – Absolutely essential. I am singing this song right now. Right. Now.
  2. White Christmas  – Possibly my favorite holiday movie ever. It seriously has it all.
  3. A Charlie Brown Christmas  – An equally essential choice. Dance it out.
  4. Mickey’s Christmas Carol  – Probably my favorite of the Carols. I get giddy just watching the opening.
  5. The Muppet Christmas Carol  – Almost tied with Mickey. So many good songs.
  6. How the Grinch Stole Christmas – I am a Max the dog fangirl.  Cartoon version only, please.  As far as I’m concerned, that Jim Carrey thing never happened.
  7. ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas – This was always one of my favorites growing up.  Mice! Saving Christmas!
  8. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer – I still refer to the Island of Misfit Toys on a regular basis (possibly as often as once a week).
  9. Elf  – Buddy the Elf, what’s your favorite color?
  10. It’s a Wonderful Life  – Oh, George Bailey. You get me every time.

Oh, and I also need to watch these two things:

The most essential viewing of all.

So, tell me… what do you absolutely have to watch to get into the holiday mood?

(Oh, and if you happened to notice that there was no linkage yesterday, have no fear. I’m hoping to post a non-Friday installment in the near future to make up for it!)

  1. Oh so many of the same as you. I do love the Gringe(‘s dog), Rudolph (although, man, it’s a wonder we weren’t all terrified of Santa after that one) and The Night Before Christmas (“You hope, and I’ll hurry, you pray and I’ll plan…” 🙂 and I am especially fond of White Christmas.

I have a personal tradition that goes back many, many years though and involves a Christmas movie oft derided. On Christmas eve, just before midnight, I always watch the musical version of a Christmas Carol, the 1970 version starring Albert Finney. I know people hate it but I love it. Everything about it. I love the music, the dark humor, the giddy bliss and even the love story. And I believe there is no better way to wake up Christmas morning than with the idea that we can “begin again” running in my head/heart.

  2. The Muppet’s Christmas Carol is my very favorite. In fact, it’s the only Christmas movie that I absolutely must watch every year. And, okay, sometimes I watch it in May.

  3. Who hates the musical version of A Christmas Carol?? (re: comment above.) My whole family loves it. Well, except the hubs, but he hates musicals in general. I own it on DVD (and used to own it on VHS…) and watch it every year. The one I hate is the George C Scott one.

I agree with you on the Grinch – I’m pretty sure Dr. Seuss was rolling in his grave when they made that version.

  4. Your 10 choices are good ones, but those last 2 are the MOST important of all. Mom and I watch The Nutcracker Ballet. We have 3 versions on the DVR. Sometimes, she sees it at Lincoln Center in NY, but this year, she didn’t get tickets, so it’s TV ballerinas for us…. That’s fine with me because no dogs allowed at Lincold Center.

  5. Had a Christmas party at my sisters last night and we watched Muppets Christmas Carol, The Polar Express and the miracle on 34th Street (which I had never seen before!) The only one missing was Flint street Nativity once I have seen that Christmas will be on its way!
