6 basic things to look for when choosing a new veterinarian

I cannot overstate the importance of having a good veterinarian. Nor can I overstate the importance of developing a relationship with your vet before there’s an emergency. After all, do you really want to entrust your precious pup with someone you barely know?

Friends... no!

So, how do you avoid this predicament? Find a good veterinarian for your regular checkups, and then you’ll have someone to count on when times get tough.

Trust me, it’s worth it… even if it means you will have a few awkward conversations about whether you’re brushing your pup’s teeth or giving her too many treats.

You may be wondering how to choose the right veterinarian. After all, how do you know when you’ve found a good one? Sometimes, it can be hard to tell when you’ve got a keeper or when it’s time to move on.

Lucky for you, I’ve got a few tips to share. Continue reading

Bloggers are kind of like cicadas

We’ve talked about cicadas on the blog before. However, while reflecting upon my recent BlogPaws experience, it hit me. While I can’t speak for bloggers in general, I think I’ve stumbled upon an interesting discovery: pet bloggers are kind of like cicadas.

via giphy.com

Now, before you get bent out of shape, obviously there are some differences. None of the pet bloggers that I have met are freaky bugs with orange eyes. (If you are an actual cicada who maintains a pet blog, please give me a call. Or an email. I’m not sure which technology you prefer. However, I have so many questions for you. First, what kind of pet does a cicada have? A fruit fly? How do you type? Do you just hop from key to key? How do you want me to pronounce your name? Did you start life as a cicada or was it some sort of Kafka thing? Oh, and sorry for that “freaky” comment. No hard feelings?)

A valley of cat scratches?

It’s BlogPaws weekend! In the spirit of pet blogger unity, I thought it was the perfect time to share another meow mix link roundup, inspired by F. Scott Fitz-feral:

  1. First up, your punny pet names: Tobey Catguire, Baz Purrmann, and Hairy Mulligan. (Also, I totally made that DiCatrio pun ages ago… and with a little extra flair, to boot.)
  2. Don’t even try to pretend. You know you kind of want to buy this.
  3. If the Internet had been around back then, I bet that some of the characters in Gatsby would have inspired the inaugural first-world problems meme.
  4. I can hear the tiny violins now, can’t you?
  5. I mean, we all have rough days. You feel trapped. You don’t have an appetite. Maybe you’re feeling under the weather.
  6. Honestly, sometimes you’re the cat, and sometimes you feel like the box. You know what I’m talking about.
  7. If you’re experiencing your own first-world problems, maybe you should hit up the gym and sweat it out.
  8. In any event, I’m sorry if you’re feeling down. Hang in there, buddy. With a little hard work, you may find your goals within reach.

On another note, I demand a full-length version of this movie immediately:

So we eat on, rats against the purrent, borne back flea-lessly into the cats.

The Rhino Force is strong with this one…

I have no words.

The cute is almost too much to handle.

Speaking of rhinos (as one does), you should head over to Tiny n Fit to read her recent post about visiting South Africa. She shares some sobering facts about rhino poaching, as well as some ways that you can help. (Spoiler: you don’t even have to leave your house, although you can if you want.) Finally, you can enter to win a cool Rhino Force bracelet (ends Monday).

What are you waiting for?

National Grammar Day has gone to the dogs (and cats)

Today is National Grammar Day. I wanted to acknowledge this important day, but I really had trouble choosing a video. So, you get two.

First, I’d like to introduce you to a cat who really loves grammar.

Next, enjoy a crash course in apostrophes from a grammar-obsessed dog.

I hope to see more videos featuring the dapper Charles. I’ll be keeping an eye on his Twitter account.

Happy National Grammar Day!

Grab your puppy purse & meet me on the red carpet

As you know, I am addicted to awards shows. The Academy Awards are this weekend, which makes me feel… well, kind of like this.

(Oh, and if you follow me on Twitter, I apologize in advance for the fact that I will probably tweet far too much about the Oscars on Sunday evening.)

  1. Your punny pet names are, of course, inspired by this year’s nominees: Spaniel Day-Lewis, Alan Barkin, and Fang Lee.
  2. I wish I was throwing an Oscar party so that I could make these punny foods. I’m especially partial to Beets of the Southern Wild.
  3. Has there ever been a puppy purse on the red carpet at the Academy Awards? Well, there will be soon. To paraphrase Ted Mosby… Pulling. It. Off.
  4. I would very much like to hire these animal doppelgängers to star in punny remakes of my favorite Oscar movies. (Until then, this video will have to do.)
  5. If that random Tupac hologram isn’t available, maybe the Academy should consider asking Tupac Shacorgi to be a presenter instead. Ratings gold.
  6. I enjoy this slightly different take on the Best Picture race.
  7. Speaking of Best Picture winners, these posters are pretty cool.
  8. Still need to fill out your Oscar ballot? Here’s one way to make your picks.

I was torn between two videos this week, both starring the canine star of a past Best Picture winner: Uggie from The Artist! Although this one features Uggie in a tie, the corny humor in the video below edged it out by the slimmest of margins.

Finally, in conclusion… thanks, Meryl.

If you’re worried, and you can’t sleep…

Just count your puppies instead of sheep.

Recognize that movie? I had the chance to go see the stage version last night with a good friend (hence the fact that Thursday’s post is going up on Friday). It definitely helped get me in the holiday mood – snow even fell on us at the end. (Not just confetti, but wet snow. It was a nice touch.)

Third row, baby!

Third row, baby!

I know we’ve talked about favorite Christmas movies before. However, that was two years ago, so it seemed like time to revisit the topic. My question to you – what’s your favorite? I’ll start off the discussion. My required Christmas viewing includes White Christmas (obviously), Elf, and many more…

Battle of the Christmas Carols: Which is the best?

I have a very important question for you today.

Ebeneezer Scrooge was introduced to the world by Charles Dickens. His novella, A Christmas Carol, was published in 1843. Since then, there have been countless adaptations and stories inspired by this iconic work. (There was even a Halloween twist on the story in a great episode of Roseanne.) Whether you’re a fan of Bill Murray or the Flintstones, there’s a version for you.

So, tell me.. which adaptation is your favorite? As for me, there are two that top my list:

  • Mickey’s Christmas Carol – I’ve always been a big fan of this Disney version. Honestly, it’s probably my favorite – there’s something about this one that gets me every time. I especially enjoy Goofy’s appearance as Marley’s ghost.
  • The Muppet Christmas Carol – This one is an extremely close second. Statler and Waldorf as Marley? Genius. (Apparently, I really like that role.) Also, Gonzo makes an awesome Dickens. And it’s full of puns.

Now it’s your turn. Which version do you have to watch during the holiday season? Did your favorite TV show do an episode inspired by it? Tell me your favorites in the comments  – perhaps I’ll have to add some new versions to my holiday viewing list!
