Give the dog a bone (or a Buddy Band)

Happy Friday!  Time to send you into the weekend with some lovely links…

  1. This week’s punny pet names are for our feathered friends: Emerbill Lagasse and Wolfgang Duck.
  2. I so want to throw a Saved by the Bell party.  Invitations will be in the form of Buddy Bands.  (Bonus nostalgia: this Jem cake.)
  3. Speaking of sweets, I finally updated my oft-neglected cupcake blog.  Check it out!
  4. Apparently I’m all about the food today… let’s tie it all together. Meet the world’s most patient dog at the Food On My Dog blog.
  5. Another awesome tumblr site?  T-Rex Trying.  It’s hard to pick a favorite, but I think this one might be mine.  (Thanks to Hey, Love for sharing this one!)
  6. For another treat, check out all of the great posts submitted to Something Wagging’s Train Your Dog Challenge and get inspired.
  7. If I had to compare dogs to a state of matter (you know, because that comes up a lot), I’d say Bella is like a gas.  She expands to fill the available space.  (I wonder what Bella would say about me.)
  8. Dogs wearing crowns – it just feels right.
  9. You know I love Pinterest.  The collection of crazy pins from Pinterest, You Are Drunk is my new guilty pleasure.
Finally, I give you today’s video… I’m kind of in love with it. No joke.

Cute, right?  Have a fantastic weekend!

A weekend of puppies & football lies ahead…

It’s Super/Puppy Bowl weekend!  I’m sure today’s theme will not surprise you…

  1. Your punny pet name: Meowrio Manningham.  (I had some trouble coming up with one today – so here are some more punny football names.)
  2. He’s no football player, but Ozzy the balancing dog is the most impressive athlete I’ve seen in a while.
  3. Hello… is it blending you’re looking for?  If so, you’ll enjoy this Super Bowl commercial from Toyota.  (The obsession continues.)
  4. On a loosely related note, here’s a Mister T tea set.
  5. Moving on… I’ll be making some cupcakes for our annual Super Bowl party.  (One of these days, I’ll also update my baking blog again.)  I hope mine turn out better than these.
  6. Puppies predicting the Super Bowl?  I hope they are wrong, but I can’t deny the cute.
  7. Something else important is happening on Sunday too – the Puppy Bowl!  Who is your favorite player?  (See them in action!)
  8. Another great thing about the Puppy Bowl?  It’s encouraging adoption!
  9. No need to focus solely on the puppies – this year, you can check out the equally awesome Elder Bowl!
  10. Don’t worry… there’s a little something for the cat lover too.  Here are your 30 cutest moments from the kitty halftime show.
I can’t wait to watch the game and cheer for the Giants.  However, I doubt there will be any instant replays that use slow-mo as well as the video below…

So what are your plans for the big game?  Are you participating in Super Dog Sunday?  Bella did last year, and we’ll be joining in the fun yet again.

When woofing worlds collide

Bella wasn’t the only furry family member at our holiday celebration. Her “cousins” were also there to open presents and beg for ham.

It’s always nice to have an overload of cuteness on hand Christmas morning, although it can be stressful if the pups decide to engage in some holiday bickering. However, I’m happy to report that last year’s peace treaty was still in effect.  All in all, it was a lovely visit.

You didn’t think Bella would let me leave her out, did you?

Did your dogs have any “cousins” come to visit?  If so, how did it go?

Eat pumpkins, not brains (or… how to survive a zombie attack)

This week, I can really use some smiles… thank goodness No Frown Friday is here when I need it most!  I also have an important zombie survival tip to share with you.  But first, a few things to send you into the weekend with a giggle or two:

  1. Your punny pet name: Tyribone Lannister.  (Confused?  See #2 below.)
  2. This might be the best PSA about spay/neuter ever… especially if you’re a nerd and into Game of Thrones like I am. (I’ll be adding this to the long list of puns I wish I’d come up with.)
  3. Bet you can’t top this senior portrait.
  4. So, I’ve told you how this blog got its name.  With that in mind, I’m sure you will understand why I giggled – a lot – about these posts from Smart Dog and Doggie Stylish.
  5. New post on the cupcake blog!  You’re welcome.
  6. With Halloween just around the corner, it seems that cute costumes are everywhere.  I couldn’t stop laughing at this gallery of 50 dogs in Star Wars costumes.
  7. Speaking of awesome costumes… it’s Ch-Ch-Chia Dog!
  8. This one has no real connection to anything else on the list… but it’s my blog so I can take some liberties right?  It’s a cheese grater that looks like a hedgehog!

Apparently I’m all about the pugs this week.  I found this video somewhat hypnotic (though not quite as hypnotic as those running geese):

(via Paw Nation)

I don’t know what you saw, but I’m pretty sure I just learned how to survive a zombie attack – always sit on a kitchen rug so that the zombies can’t quite reach you.  If only someone had shared this info with the cast of The Walking Dead.

Anyway… what are you up to this weekend?  I’m going to a corn maze/pumpkin patch with friends, and then we’re heading back to my house for a pumpkin carving party.  For Bella, that means extra people to pet her and give her love.  I don’t think she’ll mind that at all.

As for the pumpkins?  She isn’t all that interested.  However, some animals love to eat pumpkins – how does your pet feel about them?

K9 Kamp Challenge #1: Make it work

PhotobucketThis week’s challenge?  Walk it off.

The first K9 Kamp task was to walk for 60 minutes this week.  Given the fact that it feels like it’s been raining here for a month, I had a feeling that completing this challenge would be… well, a challenge.

We did manage to get in two good walks outside.  For the first walk, we had some company.  Bella had a play date with our friends’ new dog, Dozer.  (Photos below.)  It was the first time the two had met, so we decided to take a walk around the neighborhood together before letting them run around in the backyard.  (In addition to our walk, Bella got plenty of running and romping in that day as well.  She was one sleepy pup that evening!)

For our second walk, we managed to get out during one of the rare sunny spells.  However, to complete our final minutes for the week, I had to get creative.  Things here have felt sort of like a monsoon – going outside was not a great option, so I decided to improvise.  Bella and I did some laps around the house instead.  I’m sure anyone looking through my windows would think I’d finally gone insane.  In any event, I convinced Bella to follow me around the first floor by carrying her favorite rope bone.  It ultimately became a walk/tug hybrid, but I think we did the best we could given the circumstances.

Be sure to check in with Kol’s Notes and Peggy’s Pet Place today to read more recaps of the first challenge, and then check them out tomorrow for Challenge #2.  To tide you over until then, I leave you with a few photos from Bella’s play date…

I’m not sure what’s up with Bella’s face in that last photo… she
managed to get stuff stuck to her face during the course of the play
date.  I removed it, of course – but not without taking a quick photo
first!

Bella’s in the holiday spirit…

To those of you in the U.S., I hope you have a wonderful July 4th!  It’s been busy around here… I made some patriotic cupcakes and a ridiculous amount of sangria yesterday.  (No joke – I bought a 2 gallon cooler to store it in. Let’s just hope that nobody tries to go total sports fan and dump it on someone’s head as if it were Gatorade.)  In addition, I’ve made some giant submarine sandwiches, and a vat (also not really an exaggeration) of Asian Noodle Salad.  We won’t starve, that’s for sure!

Anyway, no time for a long post, but I wanted to wish all of you a happy 4th of July – I hope you have a fantastic day.  So does Bella… she even dressed for the occasion:

In spite of the holiday, Bella’s nap schedule proceeds as usual.

Happy 4th!

Bella: the Great Houndini

Much like the space station, we have an airlock.  Allow me to explain…

A reminder to our visitors… a non-football version adorns the door year-round.

Bella is quite the little escape artist, and will take any opportunity to flee.  (All Bella escape attempts are referred to as “fleeing” based upon a surprisingly adorable note a maintenance man left in our old apartment.)  When I was a child, our dogs were fairly well-behaved and listened to my mom when she told them to stay in the yard.  (That woman had some sort of magical Dr. Doolittle-esque abilities – I don’t think she had to train them.  They just listened.)  My family did experience one terrifying lost dog incident when Kandi (our Chihuahua) got lost in Richmond for a few days.  We were visiting family, and Kandi managed to slip out.  It was quite the harrowing experience – my parents even hired Bloodhounds to track her down.  Eventually, we got a call from someone that had spotted Kandi sneaking cat food, and we were able to find her.

So, needless to say, I’m usually fairly careful about the potential for puppy escape after the Kandi escapade.  Even so, Bella has managed to get around my defenses a few times.  Fortunately, her penchant for escape is often balanced out by her puppy ADHD (aka her tendency to get distracted, or “oooh, shiny!”).  Our first experience with the crafty canine flight risk also known as Bella was after a long road trip for the holidays.  While we were bringing our luggage inside the apartment, Bella slipped by and ran outside.  We chased her and I began to panic… however, she was distracted by the sight of a toy tricycle someone had left outside, and we were able to catch her.

After that, we put Bella on lockdown.  Baby gates were purchased, and all friends and family were trained in the art of Bella containment.  Even so, Bella managed to escape while we were visiting my parents.  The scene was complete and utter chaos – my (now) hubby running frantically after Bella, while my mom hopped in the car to give chase.  My parents live in a fairly rural area – there’s a quarter mile of gravel road until you hit the pavement.  I thank my lucky stars every day that Bella followed the road instead of sprinting into the woods somewhere along the way.  I thank those same lucky stars that she stopped to sniff a flower, making it possible for the hub to tackle her and bring her back to base.  Bella really knows how to add some excitement to your day.

Anyway, after these various escape attempts, we got pretty serious about our containment plans.  At our last apartment, we only entered through the garage because it had what became known as the airlock.  There was a door from the garage to the laundry room and another door separating the laundry room from the kitchen.  Thus, it was possible to come and go without Bella ever having an unauthorized path to the outside world.  When we purchased our house, it also had a laundry room airlock – it was obviously meant to be.  I do sometimes wonder if Bella thinks we just sit in the laundry room all day…

(via Comics.com. Click the comic to see a clearer version.)

In any event, we still have an airlock in our laundry room.  We also decided to apply this principle to our yard.  When redoing the fence, it occurred to us that an outside airlock would be invaluable.  So, we decided to borrow a page from the dog park playbook and install a double gate.  I think that our friends who don’t own dogs think we’re weird… but it’s one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.
We had the gate installed so that only one part of the gate can be open at a time, which minimizes the chance that our Houndini can escape and allows us to breathe a little easier when she’s out in the yard.

Bella containment was a factor I considered when looking for a house, and it’s definitely influenced other house decisions as well.  Is this something you take into account too, or am I just a crazy dog lady?  What steps have you taken to contain your own furry flight risk?  Tell me about it in the comments!

(Although this post deals with preventative measures, we’ve also had Bella microchipped and are registered with HomeAgain.  I also recommend you check out BlanketID if you’re looking for additional options that will help you recover a lost pet.  Better safe than sorry!)

How sweet it is

Bella Bowl V is over now… Bella was a good hostess, as usual. By the end of the night, she was rather exhausted from all of her hostessing duties:

Anyway, the party was a success… lots of good friends and good food.  In addition to the usual football fare like buffalo chicken dip and white chicken chili, we offered quite the dessert selection.  Nostalgia ruled the day – the Rice Krispie treats were a big hit, as were the butterscotch haystacks.  (My friend’s mom used to make these and I loved them!  If you’ve never had them, I recommend giving them a try.)

I also ordered cupcakes from Hey Love.  They were both adorable and delicious!  (In addition to yummy sweets, she also provides a host of other design and party services – go visit and say hi!  She even has a puppy connection – her pup Nico came from the same rescue group as Bella – that means they’re related, right?)

Not only did Michelle from Hey Love deliver some fantastic cupcakes, she was also kind enough to come over the night before the big game for a cake pop date!  We took inspiration from Bakerella and made football cake pops.  Unfortunately, while taking the (not yet coated) pops out of the freezer, I managed to drop half of them on the floor.  Luckily there was no puppy nearby to sneak a chocolate treat!

Anyway, below you can see the finished product… they’re not the prettiest, but they were delicious.  I found these tougher to make than the basic pops I made last year.  Oh well, practice makes perfect, right?

What did you guys do for Super Puppy Bowl weekend?

Bella Bowl V

All Things Dog Blog
Bella Bowl weekend is traditionally a busy one in our household.  That’s right, it’s not just Super Bowl weekend around here.

We throw an annual Super Bowl party known as Bella Bowl… we’re up to Bella Bowl V.  The dining room has been christened Puppy Stadium for the day.  Sometimes Bella will rock Giants paraphernalia for the party – but her interest in wearing a jersey is usually short-lived.  Such a fair weather fan…

Anyway, I’m excited to add a new tradition to our Bella Bowl/Puppy Bowl/Super Bowl weekend… the All Things Dog Blog Super Dog Sunday Blog Hop!

I didn’t have the heart to make her wear her jersey and let me take a new photo, given that the Giants didn’t even make the playoffs.  So let’s just agree that the pose above is how she reacted when she learned this news.

Name that Bella

It’s finally here… the Magical Mystery Mutt Tour!  Make sure you also visit my co-hosts Edie (of Will My Dog Hate Me) and Peggy (of Peggy’s Pet Place) today and say hi.  Read on, and then join the hop!

Now, time for everyone’s favorite game: Name… That… Breed!  Below, I’ve provided some info about the dog behind the blog, Ms. Bella.  What breed(s) do you think she is?  Leave your best guesses in the comments.

Bella – a dog of very little brain, but a lot of love.  I tend to think she’s a bit out of proportion – low to the ground, but in possession of big ears and an even bigger posterior.  (Seriously… when she sits, her butt is so big that one of her feet often sticks up in the air.)

She weighs approximately 26 pounds and is roughly 24 inches tall (from her toes to the top of her head).  Health quirks?  She’s got a few.  You’ll frequently hear her reverse sneeze, she gets carsick like a champ, and she gets more than her fair share of ear infections.  In addition, she was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism.

I’ve never heard her howl.  She barks on occasion, mostly at doorbells (including TV doorbells and the chime at the vet’s office).  She has crazy bursts of energy, but they usually flame out fast.  She loves to cuddle, but hates being under a blanket.  She does like to sleep under pieces of furniture, however.  She hops through the snow like a bunny and loves to run around in the backyard.

Finally, a few photos:

For more photos, well… there’s obviously no Bella shortage on this blog. Let the guessing begin!
