Meow mix: Let’s just pretend it’s Caturday

Today, we’re celebrating Caturday a little early…

  1. First up, your punny pet names: Scratch Adams and Henry Hissinger.
  2. Have you ever wondered how cats see the world? Now you know.
  3. Speaking of, this cat has a question that just might blow your mind.
  4. Next time you’re bored at work, just play with some shelter cats online. It’s win-win (except for your employer, I suppose… but just show your boss this article and you’ll be fine).
  5. This cat went on a cross-country journey. I feel lazy now.
  6. The cuteness. It is epic.
  7. Does your cat refuse to come when called? Use this simple method and all of your problems will be solved.
  8. I’m pretty sure that elementary school me had a sweater that would be right at home in this collection of kitty dresses. I was that cool.
  9. Did this really happen? Either way, I now pronounce Rod Stewart for… ev… er… hilarious.
  10. Meet the world’s most elusive annoyed creature: the Caticorn.

I bet this cat wishes his human would learn how to aim.

Get it together, dude.

FOHA: Forty years of helping animals

Blog the ChangeFor this round of Blog the Change for Animals, I wanted to highlight an organization that has been helping animals since before I was a twinkle in my parents’ eyes.

Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA) in northern Virginia has been serving the DC area since 1973. Last year, FOHA gave me a wonderful place to volunteer and a new pup in the form of Tavish. This year, FOHA celebrates its 40th anniversary. Continue reading

Getting into the holiday spirit…

It’s time for your Friday linkage…

  1. Your punny pet name: Bob Scratchit.
  2. We’ll start with a little shameless self-promotion. My long-dormant baking blog is back on the scene! Wondering what to make for the holidays? Check out my recipe for Coconut BonBons.
  3. Not sure what to get your furry (or feathered) friend this holiday season? Here are some great ideas.
  4. I can’t get enough Grumpy Cat. The 12 Days of Christmas will never be the same.
  5. Best version of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas ever? You be the judge.
  6. Definitely an awesome holiday window display.
  7. I just got my holiday cards – now I just need to find the time to address them. (I used to be a Kodak Gallery gal, but they don’t do the cards online anymore. I tried Snapfish this time around – what service do you use?) Speaking of great Christmas cards, have you seen the White House one this year? Adorbs.

Finally, it’s time for today’s video. I figure you can’t go wrong with Simon’s Cat:

The one with a lot of Friends nostalgia

I’ve got Friends on the brain today. Why? Well, I meant to do a post about Thanksgiving TV specials, but I didn’t get it up in time. I did make sure to get in my traditional viewing of the Garfield and Peanuts specials yesterday, and I started thinking about other Thanksgiving TV. I’ve always really enjoyed all of the Friends Thanksgiving episodes. Thus, today’s theme was born…

  1. First up, your punny pet name: Phoebe Ruffay.
  2. The Internet was not helping me out with many Friends-related puns, so this one will have to do. (The name of the show is just too darn generic.)
  3. Speaking of TV-related puns, this one gave me the giggles.
  4. I’m not done with the punny goodness just yet. The menu at this fictional restaurant did me in. Joint custardy!
  5. Grumpy cat, grumpy cat… what are they feeding you? Grumpy cat, grumpy cat… it’s not your fault.
  6. Did you eat too much yesterday? Perhaps it left you feeling lethargic… even slothful? This video of a real baby sloth will make you feel better.
  7. Have you seen the “Least Likely to Be Adopted” Project? Awesome. These dogs could use some good friends.

Finally, here’s today’s video:

Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

It’s raining on my face: Pilots ‘N Paws

Three local rescue groups in the northern Virginia area (including HART and FOHA, who you may remember from such awesome dogs as Bella and Tavish) participated in a massive Pilots ‘N Paws event on Saturday.  The event was called the “Dog is My Copilot” Rescue Flyaway, and it helped save over 300 dogs.

As part of this flyaway event, more than one hundred dogs were brought from high-kill shelters in North Carolina to groups in northern Virginia. The dogs have now been placed in foster homes and shelters with no-kill pledges. Pretty cool, huh?

I have a special video to share with you today – it’s from the Asheville Humane Society, one of the groups in North Carolina helping to send these lucky pups on their way to northern Virginia and other destinations. (Insert obligatory tissue warning here.)

Is it raining on your face too?  It just so happens to be a pretty soggy day here, so perhaps everyone will just think I was outside too long.

It’s not a Full House without a pet…

Today, we’re hopping in the Wayback Machine for another dose of nostalgia. (Mr. Peabody would approve.) By now, you should know that I just can’t help myself…

  1. First up, your punny pet name for this week: Lick Carter (see #8 below).
  2. Have you ever wondered what the lyrics to Ice Ice Baby mean? I’m going to guess that you have not. Nonetheless, I recommend that you stop, collaborate, and listen to Adam Scott explain them to you.  (I have now decided that I would like Adam Scott to explain all lyrics to me. Forever.)
  3. Obviously, Fraggles make everything better.  (Speaking of rock…)
  4. Remember Mr. Wizard? Apparently his social skills were not on a par with his science skills.  I kid, I kid
  5. If only I’d held on to a few liters of Crystal Pepsi, I’d be a hundredaire by now.
  6. This next one is not for the easily offended: Kanye’d by the Bell.
  7. Backstreet’s back… all right?

Well, I always knew Dylan McKay wasn’t such a bad boy. In fact, Luke Perry may have just won the hearts of animal lovers everywhere. Bonus: he’s not the only one. I love seeing stars from my youth promoting pet adoption:

On a related note, if Dylan and Kelly develop a sitcom together, I will choose it faster than Kelly chose herself. Or faster than Donna got drunk at prom. You know it.

On a related related note, remember when Brenda was in Heathers?

I’ll stop now.

Adorable “less adoptable” dogs in DC/northern Virginia: Lily & Matt

As you know, I often feature adoptable pets from local rescue groups. Today, I’m participating in Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week (through September 23), when Petfinder and others raise awareness about the many deserving pets who may be overlooked by potential adopters.

So, this time I’m sharing a few dogs that would fall into that so-called “less adoptable” category. (Or, as I like to call it, the Super Awesome category.)  Today’s adorable adoptables are from Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA) and City Dogs Rescue (CDR). Ready to meet this week’s featured pups, Matt and Lily? Here we go…

Saturday Night Links: Cat Video Edition!

This week’s Friday link roundup is a tad late… so we’ll just call it a special installment of Saturday Night Links, okay?

  1. First up, your punny pet name: Aaron Purr.
  2. I know dogs like chew toys, but apparently cats do too. However, I wouldn’t recommend getting your cat one of these.
  3. I’m not really sure what’s happening here, but I wish I was relaxed as this cat.
  4. On a completely serious note, this cat is my new hero.  As is this guy.
  5. You know I can’t resist a great Game of Thrones reference. (After all, a Lannister always spays his pets.) As such, I obviously enjoyed this video of a cat singing the theme song.
  6. Speaking of cat videos, did you know that there is a whole festival devoted to the topic? Here’s a first-hand account.
  7. It’s time to take cat videos to the next level – play with shelter cats online when you’re looking to adopt!

Finally, today’s video is about an otter. Just kidding. It’s obviously about a cat. Don’t blink or you might miss him.

(via Bunny Food)

So, there you have it – enough cat videos to keep you busy for a while. If not, then just stare into this drawer of kittens until you’re satisfied.
